In Round 1, the Rangers squared off against rival Philadelphia Flyers. The Rangers won Game 1 on the road and then traded wins before outlasting the Flyers in a tightly fought 2-1 Game 7 at Madison Square Garden.
The Rangers stole another Game 1 on the road, this time against their Round 2 opponent, the Pittsburgh Penguins. Things looked bleak for the Rangers after being outscored 9-2 while losing the next three consecutive games. The Rangers rallied and reeled of three straight wins of their own, including a gritty 2-1 win on the road in Game 7.
In the Eastern Conference Finals the Rangers faced the Montreal Canadiens, their 15th time meeting in the playoffs, more than any other NHL opponent. The Rangers jumped all over the Habs with a 7-2 win in Game 1, which they followed with another Game 2 road win. The teams traded wins the next three games before the Rangers closed out the series in Game 6 in front of a raucous crowd at Madison Square Garden.
